Many people use alcohol to escape their problems or to change their personalities without realizing the consequences of excessive drinking. This is what happened to Mr. Lee who had drunk excessively and ended up died of intoxication, leaving Mrs. Lee and another 3 young children. It is an uphill struggle for Mrs. Lee to take care of the family as she works as a dishwasher and earns a meager salary of only RM500.
During an interview with Mrs. Lee, she reminisced that her husband used to be a responsible person whom he would take good care of the family. Her husband used to work as a taxi driver but soon her husband started drinking to excess and neglected his work. She tried to advise her husband and pull him back to the right pathway but she failed to do so. Mrs. Lee claimed that there were once her husband had decided to quit drinking but this hope did not last long. After a short period of 2 years, her husband was diagnosed with liver cancer. It was rather a hard time for Mrs. Lee during the days when Mr. Lee was being treated in the hospital. However, Mrs. Lee never gave up his husband. Mrs. Lee had to work, cook for the family, and accompanied her husband for electrotherapy. Sadly, as soon as her husband recovered slightly, Mr. Lee continued drinking again and in the end, her husband died of intoxication. Since then Mrs. Lee has to work hard to make ends’ meet. Until now, Mrs. Lee still owes a significant amount of medical expenses and her pay of RM500 is definitely insufficient to pay off the debt.

This is a sad story of Lee Poh Gaik who have gone through a series of never ending unfortunate events. The couple comes from one of the suburban area of Penang, struggling with poverty as well as sicknesses. Lee Poh Gaik, at the age of fourty-eight, is suffering from both cervical cancer and diabetes. She is unable to walk and is forced to sit on a chair for long term. Also, her vision is deteriorating due to diabetes. Her right fingers had been amputated and her left hand is full of needle marks. Her husband is responsible for all her daily routine yet he himself is suffering from oral cancer. In order to be able to take good care of Lee, her husband refuses to seek medical treatment. This resulted in gradual growth of his jaw tumor and is causing his lower teeth to fall out. Her husband too had resigned from his job as a lorry driver three years ago in order to take care of Lee. He explained that he was afraid that no one would take good care of his wife and thus, insisted to do it on his own to ensure the best treatment for his beloved wife.
The couple raised three children in which their eldest daughter and their second son are now working and capable to lessen the family’s burden. The youngest daughter is currently studying in Form 4. Lee said that she was working as a cinema ticket inspector but became unemployed after the cinema had been closed down. Subsequently, she worked in one of those electronics factories before she was diagnosed with cancer in 2003. Additionally, Lee has been haunted by diabetes and hypertension since twenty years ago. She has to consume long-term medication.
Within the next 3 years, the doctor from Penang General Hospital had performed a surgery on her but Lee has not recovered from cervical cancer. What make it worse is that Lee has suffered even more serious diabetes and she has to go through dialysis thrice per week. As such, Lee has to pay RM1000 for dialysis fee per month and another RM 1000 for drug injection and diapers expenses. Lee also needs to pay RM600 per month for anti-anemic. Lee exclaimed that this is a heavy burden for the family to pay out such medical expenses as both her husband and she are unemployed. They might even consider requesting their youngest daughter to quit schooling to reduce financial burden.

Condition: Suffering from limbs pain due to Scoliosis.
Sutera Morgan, who is aged 24 years old, has been diagnosed with scoliosis 3 years ago. His spine has developed a 180-degree arc which led to his appearance different from others. Also, due to scoliosis, he suffers from limbs pain. Morgan is currently waiting to undergo the necessary surgery to correct his spine yet he is unable to do so because of the expensive medical bills.
Morgan is an orphan who is adopted by his aunt since young. Unfortunately, his aunt is unable to afford his medical expenses as she is only earning RM300 per month. Even though the welfare grants RM300 to the family, his aunt, being a single mother, has to raise 5 children and this has resulted in great difficulty for his aunt to afford his medical bills. It was told that Morgan had not been taking any medicines for more than 4 months because of the inability to afford the medicines; the current medical expenses are cost about RM600 which includes various pain killers and hemostatic. As a result, Morgan is in pain for more than 4 months and he barely can sleep.

- Ka Wei was accompanied by parents for a hearing assessment for a second opinion on the diagnosis of hearing loss by Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Parents reported that child has no expressive speech currently and communicates by gestures. They also reported that she would respond to some loud sounds occasionally. No significant risk factors for hearing loss were reported

- Now she is undergoing medical checkup at Hospital UniversitI Kebangsaan Malaysia

Cheong Hui Kee, a girl at the age of three, has been diagnosed with leukaemia and is currently being treated in Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Every month, Cheong has to undergo a numbers of chemotherapy and this will last for at least 2 years. The parents of Cheong are anxious for their beloved daughter and are struggling to bring Cheong for her medical treatments in Kuala Lumpur. Cheong’s parents have to travel between Seremban and Kuala Lumpur constantly and this has worn them out.
During the interview with Nanyang reporters, Cheong’s father exclaimed that it was rather an uphill struggle to support the family as well as Cheong’s medical expenses. He merely earns a low income and his performance in work is greatly affected by the regular visits to Hospital Kuala Lumpur where Cheong receives her treatment. Cheong’s father has to travel constantly between Seremban and Hospital Kuala Lumpur, and this has resulted in him neglecting his business. Cheong’s medical expenses have cost up to RM 1500 per month and this does not include other expenses such as transportation fees, hospitalization fees, expenses during hospitalization and among others. As a result, Cheong’s father is having difficulty to afford Cheong’s medical expenses which amounts to at least RM 100,000 and thus, the parents hope that there are donations from the public to help them out.
