An earlier article on Du (“Medical Aids: Du”, 2 November 2011) was published here.
Wang is an elderly whom she lives alone in a rented flat. She earns a living by collecting scrap papers around her residential area. Although Wang is struggling with poverty, she has no family members or relatives she can turn to. Every day, Wang is forced to walk around to collect scrap papers despite she is a diabetic. She too suffers from back pain and her toe was amputated few years ago due to an accident. As she is getting older, her back pain has caused her to develop a hunchback and the pain is getting unbearable. However, all her pains do not stop her from walking around to collect scrap papers as this is the only income she can earn from. Wang lives a simple life. Besides collecting scrap papers, she diligently clean her house and prays to the God. Every day without fails, Wang will dutifully pray to the God and it seems that believing in the God is the only strength for her to go on her life. During the interview with Wang, she reminisced the past that she used to have a life partner to rely on. Sadly, her relationship was strongly against by her mother and demanded Wang to work to raise the whole family. Wang’s mother subsequently died of diabetes and her brother too died of a car accident, living no other family members with her. Wang felt sympathy for her sister-in law and the children, thus, she decided to sacrifice herself to raise her brother’s family. Wang hoped that in future her nephews and nieces would take good care of herself. Yet in return, all his nieces and nephews ignored her and turned her away.
It is rather a distressing moment when the breadwinner of a family is unable to earn a living anymore. Eng Ah Kiat (Ng), who works as a plumbing worker, is currently unable to move around as he accidentally fell off from the ceiling when he was trying to fix a water tank. As a result, he broke his pelvis and back bones, and fractured both his wrists. Being the breadwinner of the family, Ng is worried about the family’s financial burdens more than his injuries. Ng was being treated in the hospital for 2 weeks. To date, both Ng’s wrists are bandaged and he needs to use cushion to fix his broken back and pelvic bones. Ng would not be able to move around until all his injuries have recovered. The doctor in charge broke the news to Ng that those injuries might take few months or up to more than a year to be recovered; the Ng family would lose their income for a long term. Luckily, all the medical expenses were covered by Ng’s employer and this has, indeed, lessened their worry. Ng has three children whom they are still young. Ng claimed that it was rather an uphill struggle even before his injuries; he was unable to afford massive living expenses, inflation and school fees of his three children with his low income. Ng too has not been paying the rental for more than 4 years. Fortunately, the landlord is a kind-hearted person and he allows them to pay him once their financial status is getting better. And now that he is unable to work, the financial burden of the family is getting heavier. Yet his wife is unable to help to reduce the burden as she needs to take care of Ng and their children.
Du is a 14-year-old boy who is both mentally and physically handicapped. He was not born handicapped but due to a high fever at the age of two. The parents were negligent in sending him to the hospital on time when he was having a high fever. That had resulted in him suffering from asphyxia and consequently hindered the natural growth of Du. His spine fails to develop well and Du has to rely on wheelchair. Sadly, Du’s father never feels sympathy for his son. Instead, he is ashamed of having such a son, not realizing that he is part of the fault. The grandparents of Du’s father too give Du a cold shoulder. They tease and scold their grandson without showing love and care to Du. Du’s mother is the only one who never abandons Du. Du’s mother is disappointed with her husband and her parents-in-law. They never give support to her and Du. She used to cry silently at night and there were couples of times she thought of committing suicide. Despite having a hard time, she knows that her son needs her most and this has given her the strength to go on her life. She stays strong even her husband and her parents-in-law do not want to take care of Du and ignore them completely.
Tey Cai Wei (Cheng) is a 29-year-old lady who was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in May 2010. Cheng had undergone four chemotherapies between the days of May 2010 and January 2011, hoping that she could recover by then. Her mother had exhausted nearly RM 80, 000 of her savings to treat Cheng but unfortunately, Cheng suffered a relapse in this year August. The doctor in charge of Cheng advised that Cheng has to undergo stem cell transplant surgery which would cost her around RM 200,000. Being brought up by her single mother, Cheng has no other siblings or relatives to look for any stem cell donors. The doctor in charge of Cheng has to search suitable stem cell from the international stem cell donor organization which will cost them around RM 200, 000. They are really anxious about the fund as Cheng’s mother had spent all her savings on the previous treatments. And now they need another RM 200, 000 to treat this illness. Cheng had quitted her job as a marketing executive to treat her illness. Cheng’s mother was forced to continue to earn a living. However, Cheng had to undergo chemotherapy again before the transplant surgery and that had resulted Cheng in an extremely weak condition. Since then, Cheng’s mother decided to give up her job to take good care of Cheng; Cheng is unable to consume any solid foods and is unable to walk too. Consequently, there is no income for Cheng and her mother.
Yap is a 13-year-old boy who has been diagnosed with the high risk type of leukaemia when he was only 10 years old. Yap had since then received medical treatments in a hospital. Initially, those medical treatments had stabilized his condition and Yap did not need to rely on medicines for more than half a year. Unfortunately, after more than 2 years, Yap suffers relapse and he has to undergo the necessary treatments again or bone marrow transplant. It is surprised to hear that Yap has decided to forgo the treatments due to the fear of chemotherapy treatments and sensitivity to drugs. The only hope he has is to wait for suitable bone marrow to save his life but this seems to be of little chance. Thus, at the meantime, Yap has to rely on other alternative such as Chinese herbal and medicine to treat his leukaemia. The parents of Yap gave Yap to make a choice whether to be treated in the hospital. They claimed that Yap is mature enough to decide his life and they knew that Yap is afraid of those medical treatments he had undergone previously. Yap’s mother, who had seen his son suffered ill effects from chemotherapy treatments, does not wish to force him to be treated in the hospital; she wants him to live happily. On the other hand, Yap’s mother has come out with her own recipe to treat Yap, largely relying on Chinese herbals.
