Nanyang Press Foundation
Since 1999, the Foundation has been making its efforts in extending its services and aids to those who are less fortunate ones. Substantial contributions from the supporting donors have gone to our four dialysis centers subsidizing treatment for patients and maintaining the machines, helping patients from needy families with the Foundation’s medical-aid program, organizing empowerment program for the needy and providing the younger generation with a platform to participate in community service activities so that they learn and grow up as useful citizens.
With a vision to bring the best positive aid for the needy, the Foundation has implemented a series of positive mind transformation and effective counselling programmes in its support for orphans, old folks, single mothers, disabled persons and the less fortunate ones. With the encouraging support from the professionals of established NGOs, activities such as conference on counselling for school teachers and charity activity for fund raising have been organized.
The Foundation has been actively helping any victims of the natural disasters. For example, in November 2010, a terrible flood disaster happened in the north states of Malaysia and as a result, a few schools had been affected. Without hesitation, the Foundation had arranged for financial support to be given to the affected primary and secondary schools to restore the schools’ fences, classroom furniture, teaching and reading materials. The members of the foundation do not restrict themselves to only Malaysia. In fact, the Foundation also extended its assistance to the disaster relief mission such as helping the flood victims in Ayutthaya (Thailand) and volcanic eruption victims in Yogyakarta (Indonesia). To ensure proper dispensation of relief fund, Khor Yuyin, the Manager of Yayasan Nanyang Press had participated in the management and relief activities at the disaster locations.
The Foundation too involves in self-advocacy movement in Malaysia to reduce the isolation of needy and orphans with learning disabilities. Training schools and centers will be developed to provide the skills, care, love and experience to this group of children so that they can take greater control over their own lives and be integrated with the community. They will not become a burden to their families.
Besides that, the Foundation has noticed that there are poor elderly whom they stay far from the city and are having difficulties in obtaining any necessity in life. The Foundation is concerned about those elderly and has made efforts in helping them. For example, in this year June, the members of the Foundation had visited an elderly who was aged eighty-five years old. Despite her age, the elderly insists on labouring to earn a meagre income in order to support herself. The elderly claimed that her life was miserable and did not know the meaning of live. Without wasting the opportunity, the members of the Foundation decided to treat the elderly with a decent meal and in response, the elderly was extremely touched and she exclaimed that it was the best meal she had in her entire life. The members of the Foundation were pleased that they managed to help her and were hoping that in the future they would strive to help more of her kinds.
Not forgetting those old folks from various Homes and Charity Organisation, the Foundation had brought 100 old folks to National Bird Park for a walk in July. It was a successful outdoor event where the 16 guidelines volunteers from the Foundation were eagerly helping out and spending time with the old folks. Those old folks were enjoyed even though most of them had difficulty in walking. They felt the care and the smiles from their faces were worthwhile.
